Long haul destinations trump Euro hot-spots for Easter break

South Africa car hire bookings have seen a 55% year-on-year increase as travellers opt for long haul hot-spots over closer-to-home European destinations for the Easter holiday, according to Holiday Autos.

As travellers escape to the warmer climes for the bank holiday break, other destinations to see an increase in car hire bookings six weeks ahead of Easter include Australia (up 50%) and Cyprus (up 50%), bucking the short-haul trend normally seen for Easter getaways.

Car hire prices continue to fall in 2011

Car hire prices are continuing to fall across the world according to the latest Holiday Autos Car Hire Price Index. The average price of hiring a compact car for one week fell to £188 in 2010, compared to £193 in 2010, a drop of 3%.*

Of the destinations surveyed, prices fell fastest in Gibraltar where the cost of one week’s car rental dropped 44% to an average £93. There are also bargains to be had in Madrid, (where prices fell by 35% to £124) and in California, down 25% to £136.

Top five decreases in rental prices in 2011 (compared to 2010)

Increased competition between suppliers in family-favourite European destinations has contributed to a decrease in rental prices. Aggressive growth plans by suppliers in Italy, Spain and Portugal has also helped to keep prices low in 2011.

Recent civil unrest in Northern Africa, including popular holiday hotspots like Egypt and Morocco, has driven customers back to ‘failsafe’ destinations such as Spain and France where travellers are making the most of the steadily declining prices.

However, there are still some pricing hot spots where a week’s car hire will cost in excess of £300. Switzerland tops the list of most expensive destinations for car hire this year with one week’s rental from Zurich airport costing £447, closely followed by Geneva airport at £363 a week.  New Zealand follows closely behind with Christchurch airport at £336 and then France with Nice airport costing £310 for a week.

Top ten most expensive destinations for car rental in 2011

Our latest report reveals that this trend is still continuing with many destinations proving great value for money.

“With 2012 on the horizon, we expect to see prices in popular European destinations to remain competitive while more long haul destinations such as New Zealand, South Africa and Hawaii will see increases in pricing.

“However, there are plenty of great bargains available for customers who book early and keep their eye out for offers and sales during key times. Popular destinations will always book up fast, so our advice is not to leave booking car hire to the last minute to avoid being disappointed.”

Holiday Autos bolsters global marketing team with two new senior appointments

LONDON. 12 December  2011: Holiday Autos, the world’s largest leisure car hire broker, continues to expand its global marketing team with the appointment of Kevin Currie as Global Director of Digital Marketing and Elise Newman as Global Head of Affiliate Marketing and Meta Search.

Kevin joins Holiday Autos from Octopus.com where he was previously Marketing Director and played an instrumental role in leading the online and offline marketing functions for the global hotel website. Prior to that, he was General Manager of Somewhere2stay and Head of Web at Virgin Holidays.

At Holiday Autos Kevin will oversee the shaping and development of the global digital marketing strategy. He will be responsible for creating, planning, tracking and monitoring an effective and efficient online marketing strategy to drive profitable growth in e-commerce sales.

Also joining Holiday Autos is Elise Newman, who comes from Affiliate Window where she oversaw client strategy and relationship management as Key Accounts Team Leader. Prior to this she held senior management roles at LinkShare Corporation and Blue Chip Holidays.

Elise’s role as Global Head of Affiliate Marketing and Meta Search will see her developing the meta search and affiliate channel across all categories as well as working with the network and internal teams to roll out new partners, extend markets and drive revenue through existing partners. She will also be responsible for assisting the markets in distributing feeds and tools available in major markets as well as helping with pan European partnership deals.
